To the Barber Shop

Jasper and I made our first trip to a barber shop today. It was time for Jasper's second haircut. I looked into specialty places that have toys and fun chairs for kids, but they are so expensive! He was so good during his first cut, I figured a regular barber shop was worth a try.

Jasper was impressed by the authentic barber shop pole.

We had to wait while the client ahead of us received his cut. This gave Jasper a chance to see the clippers in action and take everything in. He sat quietly for a bit and then, with permission, climbed on two empty barber chairs. One was old and had a compartment in the arm for cigarette ashes, very interesting to a two-year-old. I was fascinated too, they had soccer playing on two TVs and apart from a football doormat, it was a no-frills kind of place. I almost felt like I had snuck into a boys only club except everyone was very nice.

Once it was Jasper's turn he was a bit nervous, but the barber was great. Jasper was able to relax once he realized he could see what was happening in the mirror across from him. He handled the buzzing clippers well.

There were about five men waiting after us. Occasionally, they encouraged Jasper and told him what a good job he was doing. When you have a child and you're out in public, you become used to attention from female strangers. It was so sweet to see this group of men giving Jasper support. We plan to go back.
